The Continental Rift
Mike Fuller attempts to build some bridges.
The problem I want to address is the rift between Analytic and Continental philosophy. Why is it that philosophers from each tradition can look at the work of the other and declare in amazement : “Is this philosophy?……surely not!”
In the attempt to investigate the nature and causes and possible resolutions of this rift, I shall set out the issues in four main parts. Firstly, I shall look at the historical background. Secondly, I shall try to distinguish the main functions of philosophy, in the hope that this may illuminate the problem. Thirdly, I shall examine some key figures and movements in this rift.
