Side note: Philosopher & social reformer Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) founded utilitarianism, saying we should act so as to bring about the greatest overall happiness. His godson John Stuart Mill (1806-73) took utilitarianism in a new direction, arguing that instead of individual acts we should find general rules likely to maximise happiness, and follow those. But the consequences of our actions are hard to predict.
